Dior originally released the Fusion Mono Eyeshadow formula in eight shades, this past fall, with the Mystic Metallics Collection. This spring, Dior has released a few new shades of their Fusion Mono Eyeshadows in an all new formula, matte.

The new Fusion Mono Matte Eyeshadows have a specialized texture that's designed to fuse to the eyelid leaving nothing behind but a layer of true, hazy, matte color and able to be used in two ways, "soft" and "bold".

There are a few differences between the original formula and the new matte formula than just the finish. The formula of the matte version feels a little less moist and it isn't quite as silky smooth. I found I couldn't use the matte formula wet either, when I tried it was a mess. It was exactly like taking a wet brush to a lump a clay. The biggest difference I noticed was that instead of having a sponge-tipped applicator, it had a brush applicator, much like the one that accompanies Chanel's Illusion d'Ombres.

Mirage #761 Diorshow Fusion Mono Matte Long-Wear Eyeshadow ($30 for 0.22oz/6.5g) is a gel-mousse eyeshadow with a soft, airy, pliable, almost clay-like texture. It's a medium light to medium, warm toned, brown with reddish orange undertones, and a delicate matte finish.

Mirage can be applied with the fingertips for a "soft" effect, or with a brush for a "bold", striking look. When applied with the fingertips, Mirage blends with the skin to create a wash of color. If a brush is used, the color is amplified. Swatches below show Mirage both ways. On the left it has been swatched with my fingertip for a sheer look and on the right, I used a MAC 286 brush, for greater color payoff.

Overall, I'm really happy with Mirage. The new Fusion Mono Matte Eyeshadows have a lovely formula and long staying power. I've been wearing Mirage for a few days now, and I am positively in love with the color. It's a beautiful taupey brown that I imagine will look good on a wide variety of skin tones. I wasn't expecting to like this much of Dior's Trianon Collection, but I have to say, I am quite impressed.

I purchased Mirage at Nordstrom. It's also available at Sephora, Bloomingdales and Dior.

Are you interested in the matte version of the Fusion Mono Eyeshadows? Will you be picking any of the new shades up?
