Tom Ford In The Buff, Pink Dune, Summer Fling, Sweet Spot, Paradiso Lip Color Sheers Lipstick, Spring 2014, Swatches and Review

For Spring 2014, Tom Ford has released a small, well-edited collection which focuses on "sheer, natural, effortless beauty, that celebrates the return of sunlight and warmth." The limited edition collection is comprised of four nail lacquers and eight shades of lipstick in shades that bring neutrals and bright pops of color together.

The lipsticks that are a part of the release, are actually a new type of product from the Tom Ford line. With a throw back to the original packaging, housed in a creamy white, gold-edged case and gold box, instead of the usual brown, these new lip "conditioners" have a semi-transparent formula, a unique chiseled edge with the Tom Ford stamp on the blade of each lipstick and contain a blend of moisturizing ingredients.

There are eight shades in the new limited edition range, from barely there, to bold and bright.

• Paradiso - Light Coral
• Incorrigible - Coral

I played it fairly safe and picked up In The Buff, Pink Dune, Summer Fling, Sweet Spot and Paradiso.

In The Buff 01 Lip Color Sheer ($49 for .1oz/3g) is a light to medium light, warm, chocolate brown, with undertones of orange. All of the lip sheers I picked up have some level of shimmer to them and a glossy finish. The sparkle in In The Buff, is more evident than it is in some of the other shades. The glitter in these lip sheers is really quite beautiful. It's primarily a mixture of gold and rosy pink, though I did see a tiny bit of orange and even a few sparkles of green.

When worn, In The Buff is rather sheer with one pass, but it can be layered for more coverage, though, it is one of the sheer lipsticks in the line. In The Buff, along with all the Lip Color Sheers I tried, have the slight scent of vanilla that I've come to associate with Tom Ford lip products.

Pink Dune 02 Lip Color Sheer ($49 for .1oz/3g) is a light, warm toned, peachy beige, with a slight hint of pink. It is densely laden with extremely fine shimmer and the result is almost a metallic-y, frosted finish, rather than just a shiny or glossy, sparkly one.

Pink Dune is also very sheer, in one pass, and when it is layered, it imparts more shimmer, than any color really. It more or less gives your natural lip color a golden, sun-kissed look. I can see this lipstick being very popular in summer. It is also the lightest shade of all the Lip Color Sheers that I picked up. The shimmer here is much more subtle than in all the others.

In The Buff and Pink Dune are really very close, one might confuse one for the other. In The Buff is slightly darker and a touch browner than Pink Dune, when swatched. When worn, Pink Dune looks darker, since it is sheerer and allows more of your natural lip color to show through. Though the biggest difference between the two is that the individual glitter particles of In The Buff are visible, whereas in Pink Dune, the sparkles are finer and become a part of the finish. Besides being similar to each other, they are also similar to Tom Ford Lip Color Shine in Bare. Though it is similar to Pink Dune, Bare is actually more comparable to In The Buff, with a very similar base color and the glitter being closer.

Summer Fling 04 Lip Color Sheer ($49 for .1oz/3g) is a medium light, slightly warm toned, watermelon pink. The sparkle is similar to that of In The Buff, in that is more noticeable than in some of the other Lip Color Sheers. It reminds me of a bit of a pinker version of Nars Super Orgasm, in lipstick form.

Summer Fling is one of the sheer lipsticks of the five that I tried, along with In The Buff and Pink Dune. The color payoff is similar to that of In The Buff, in that it is sheer when applied with one pass, but can be layered for more color. In fact it may yield a little bit more color than In The Buff, or it may just seem to be that way since the color is a bit more noticeable.

Summer Fling is somewhat close to Yves Saint Laurent Pink In Confidence Rouge Volupte Shine. Summer Fling is more of a red-toned pink, while Pink In Confidence is more of a beige pink. Pink In Confidence is a little bit lighter and more muted than Summer Fling as well. The shimmer in Pink In Confidence is not as noticeable and silver in color instead of gold and pink. The opacity and coverage of the two are about the same.

Sweet Spot 05 Lip Color Sheer ($49 for .1oz/3g) is a medium light to medium, cool-toned, red-orange. The sparkle is not as obvious here as it is in the others. It has a lustrous shiny sheen.

Sweet Spot has a lot more color payoff than the previous shades. It's semi sheer in one pass, and can be layered for mostly full coverage. When layered for full coverage, it does still have a slight translucency to it. The nice thing about this one, is that because it is sheer to start with, you can apply it sheerly enough so your natural lip color shows through and gives them a healthy pink glow, or you can layer it and intensify and brighten the color, so it looks more orange.

Guerlain Corail Ora Shine Automatique is a warmer, deeper orange compared to Sweet Spot, which is cooler and looks almost pastel and pink toned next to it than it actually is. The glitter is similar in both, though more visible in Corail Ora, which only has gold glitter.

Paradiso 07 Lip Color Sheer ($49 for .1oz/3g) is a medium to medium deep, warm-toned, crimson, a shade of pink-red. The shimmer is almost imperceptible since it is so small and sparse and the pigment much more intense.

Paradiso is the most pigmented of all the Lip Color Sheers I picked up. It's mostly opaque in one pass and can be built up for almost full coverage. I would be hard pressed to call this one a sheer lipstick at all. It has more of a purely shiny finish than a sparkly or shimmery one.

Paradiso resembles Chanel Rendez-Vous Rouge Coco Shine. Paradiso is warmer, vibrant and more opaque, like a traditional lipstick (even though it's labeled a sheer), while Rendez-Vous is a touch pinker, lighter and slightly translucent. Paradiso has very subtle sparkle in it, while Rendez-Vous does not.

The Lip Color Sheers have a formula somewhere in between the Tom Ford Lip Color Shines and the traditional Lip Colors. The Sheers have a thicker texture than the Shines with hydrating feel, but they are more lightweight than the Lip Colors. They glide on the lips fairly smoothly and the color layers with ease. The lasting power of these is truly exceptional, especially for a sheer lipstick, though it does vary a bit from shade to shade. The sheer shades don't last quite as long as the more pigmented shades, with Sweet Spot and Paradiso fading into a lovely stain. These last between three to five hours.

Overall, a really lovely collection of lipsticks. A wonderful, moisturizing formula that's really comfortable to wear and long lasting. My favorites are Summer Fling, Pink Dune and Sweet Spot. I also really love Paradiso after it has faded down after a few hours. I would get them while you can, they are selling quickly online and in stores.
