Tom Ford Sugar Dune, Incandescent, Coral Beach and Indiscretion Nail Lacquers, Spring 2014, Swatches and Review

Tom Ford's newest collection is winning over hearts - and lips and nails everywhere. Since it's release in mid to late January, pieces have been flying off the shelves. Part of the collection includes four new nail lacquers in classic and on-trend shades.

The nail lacquers are presented in the same color scheme as the Lip Color Sheers. They come packaged in a gold box and have a creamy white cap with gold trim. The new colors complement and accompany the Lip Color Sheers and are easily wearable for any occasion. The brights aren't too bright, the nude isn't drab and the metallic isn't overtly frosty. These are shades made for women of all ages.

Sugar Dune ($32 for .41fl. oz/12mL) is a light, cool-toned, tan cream, with undertones of pink and a slight hint of grey. It has a thinner, almost runny consistency when compared with the other three polishes in the collection. I found it applied uneven and somewhat inconsistent, and I needed three coats for opaque coverage.

Given my love for nude and neutral polishes, I was quite surprised to find I didn't have an exact dupe or anything closer to Sugar Dune. Rescue Beauty Lounge Opaque Nude is the closest, though it is warmer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Sheer Nude is bit darker and peachier. Rescue Beauty Lounge Plié is also a little darker and pinker.



Incandescent ($32 for .41fl. oz/12mL) is a light medium, warm-toned, shimmering rose gold. It is composed of silver and rosy-copper micro-glitter, with a rose gold metallic base. The silver sparkle is larger and more noticeable than the copper. It was almost opaque in one coat. As long as you take your time, brushstrokes shouldn't really be an issue. I found that those that remain simply become a part of the finish.

Incandescent is unique to my collection - at the moment- though it's not entirely new. Chanel Delight and Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire are two among several similar polishes. I pulled two polishes in the same color family, Dior Frimas and Rescue Beauty Lounge Ghost. Frimas is a rosy beige with golden flakes. The overall look of Frimas might be similar to Incandescent if there was a lot more flakies in it, though the overall colors are similar. Ghost is more of a golden brown, and doesn't have the rosy element to it that Incandescent does. Yet the finish is closer to that of Incandescent than Frimas.

Coral Beach ($32 for .41fl. oz/12mL) is a light medium to medium light, cool-toned, red-orange. The finish is somewhere between a cream and a crelly (cream and jelly hybrid). It's not quite a cream, and I don't know that I would go so far as to say it's a crelly. The finish is squishy and soft looking. There is still some slight transparency and visible nail line, even at three coats. The texture of Coral Beach is good. It wasn't as thin as Sugar Dune and it applied smooth and evenly.

Coral Beach has an almost pastel-like feel to it when compared to other shades. Dior Bouquet is lighter and pinker. Chanel Orange Fizz is the closest, though it is a smidgen darker and richer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Coral is darker and more intense still.

Indiscretion ($32 for .41fl. oz/12mL) is a medium to medium deep, warm-toned, bright pink-red. The texture and finish is similar to that of Coral Beach. The formula on Indiscretion was really quite good, needing only two coats. There is still some transparency and very slight visible nail line, but it is otherwise fully opaque.

I pulled a few other similar shades to Indiscretion and was surprised at just how close they were. Chanel Rose Insolent is lighter, pinker and more cool-toned. Chanel Rose Exuberant and Yves Saint Laurent Rose Baby Doll are both really quite close to Indiscretion, with Rose Baby Doll being the closer of the two. Rose Exuberant is a touch cooler. Rose Baby Doll is a bit darker.

Overall, a wonderful collection of nail polishes. I found the formula on these better than past polishes I have tried from Tom Ford. For the most part, they dried quickly, went on smoothly and evenly and lasted longer on than before. The colors may not be the most original I've ever seen, but they're lovely and tasteful nonetheless. Indiscretion is perhaps a bit dupable, so you may want to pass and check your stash first (I wouldn't wait too long though as they're selling fast). Incandescent is exceptional in my opinion and my favorite along with Coral Beach.
